The Opening Blog

As the Director of Marketing for a small but ambitious outdoor products manufacturer, I have decided it is time to launch my first blog.  There are many reasons why this is a good thing and potentially a very bad thing.  Ultimately, I hope this blog will enlighten readers to some very cool products my company is developing, shed some light into the marketing efforts of a small firm trying to gain traction among some very large competitors, and provide a laugh or two… hopefully not always at my expense.

The ReVisor® is our first product to market.  It is an attachable reverse visor that extends the sun protection of your favorite ball cap to cover your ears and neck.  It is a reverse visor not reversible, meaning it is meant to worn backwards while your cap’s bill is facing forward.  The result is a light, comfortable, and convenient alternative to the typical drape or guides hat outdoor enthusiasts have had available till now.  We offer the alternative to drapes flapping in the wind or drapes sticking to sweaty necks in the heat of the day.

Not only does the ReVisor® provide UPF 50+ protection to your neck and ears, but when you’re done with your outdoor activity, simply take it off and continue to wear your favorite ball cap.  I know I work for the company, but it truly is a cool product, pardon the pun.

One would think marketing the ReVisor® would be a piece of cake.  I can’t tell you how many people like the product and begin to tell us all the great markets it could take off in.  We are targeting anglers, specifically salt water anglers and fly fishermen, as our beachhead strategy for the national launch of the product.  But if we were to listen to most well meaning folks we would be in the following markets as well; dermatology, beach shops, promotions, hunting, sporting event premiums, soccer league fund raisers, etc.  Conceivably, any activity or event that is held outdoors could benefit from the ReVisor®.  So much for market segmentation.

We are building a distribution channel focused on our targeted market.  We will be selling individual units of the ReVisor® on our site (www.reversevisor.com) as soon as the ecommerce sight is integrated.  Also, as of October 15th, we are available on Orvis.com (http://www.orvis.com/store/product_choice.asp?pf_id=41XA&dir_id=758&group_id=12436&cat_id=12445&subcat_id=12446).  The Orvis Company is a leading outfitter specializing in the fly fishing market and we are proud to have national distribution through this fine company.  We hope to be available in all their approved outfitters by the New Year.

To accomplish this goal we need to move product, so our near term marketing efforts are all designed to improve product awareness and traffic to the Orvis site.  We are excited to present to its Eastern division of Guides, Outfitters, and Lodges at the Florida meeting in November.  After a day in the Florida sun wearing the ReVisor®, I am confident these aficionados will be “getting” the ReVisor® as one of our founders likes to say.

I have a lot to talk about but can’t blow it all the first go round.  I look forward to sharing with you the stories of our first commercial production, our first Fox Sports Net show, and the announcement of our official spokesperson.  I hope to get in a few fish stories, boat refurbishing stories, and the story of the manufacturer who introduced himself as the “guy Bass Pro comes to in order to knock you off.”  Oh yeah, good stuff coming.
